WOT Shifts- Bad News?

I've always heard from years ago that WOT shifts are very bad on an auto trans. I'm mostly a standard trans guy (had it been offered in the 5.4 I'd have one) so I'm not sure if there is any truth in that? With my latest mod (superchips tuner) the WOT shifts are much firmer and later, but that got me thinking, should I avoid WOT shifts if possible? Is it considerably easier on the trans to let up right before the shift, or should I keep the pedal to the floor? Truck is an 02 5.4 with a 4R70W.
Thanks,
Brian

I wouldn't worry about it.

IMHO don't overthink it, just go out and enjoy your truck.

Many guys here run blowers and such on stock trannies (or with an aftermarket valve body) with no problems.

The firmer, faster shifts are actually better for your tranny than the loooong stock shifts.

The 4r70w in your truck cannot and will not handle a wot 3-4 shift it will snap. The forward clutch cannot exhaust fast enough among other problems.
All other wot shifts are ok.

How fast would you be traveling when this shift takes place?

Troyer says.....

"on the WOT 3-4 (at which point you'd be *flying* anyway, well over 100 mph)."

Unless you're on the track, I don't see the need.

I have heard that 3-4 WOT shifts aren't good, but like others have said I don't see the need? These trucks would probably go fastest in third gear anyway. So all other WOT shifts are OK? How about WOT downshifts?

i have the superchips programmer for my truck also.. i know exactly what your talkngia bout.. reprogram it.. and this time when it gives you the option to raise the speed limiter.. keep it stock... thatll keep it from shifting way too late.... then then youll get more pickup out of the wot..

Speed is related to gear ratio and rpm limit, but either way it'll be over 100mph at minimum.

Not quite sure what you are talking about. I did raise the speed limiter just in case, well, I don't know, just in case I guess. I can't see how that would affect any of the shifts, though. I am happy with the shift points and firmness, just concerned that it might be more harmful than necessary.

the speed limiter isnt actually for speed..(mph)

its for rpms.. itll still shift at the same points and with the same firmness... but it will keep the governer on.. so that your rpms dont go out of control.. because thats whats going to hurt your truck...

i've had a WOT 3-4 shift in my 4r70w and it's not a newer moder either, it was one of the first. i don't think i was doing 100 but my speedo was pegged at 90 and it didn't snap. it actually felt pretty firm, but still long for a 4r70w 3-4 shift. i notice it won't go over 3k rpms in overdrive, is this the computer stopping me?

There is a rev limiter and a top speed limiter.

The first one restricts the RPM's and the second one restricts the MPH.

You can adjust both of them with the Edge.........I'm not sure about the Superchips.
