E40D no forward, reverse only

Hi all;
Just picked up a 1991 F150 2wd 5.0 with an E40D that has reverse only. Rus really well around the yard that way but when you shift into any forward gear, yout nothing. No strange noises or smells, but no movement either. Before I replace the trans, I am going to check for codes, check the lever postion sensor, fluid etc. Anybody think of anything else I should check before I condem this trany......Thanks..Shawn

Condemed.

Those weren't electronically controlled to an extent that a code would stop it from working. Start hunting for a replacement unit, or rebuilder.

Ok so she's history. Not to suprised, I planned for that. Next question. Where did Ford use compatible trannies? Did they stick these in cars or where they truck only? What year range am I looking for? I have been checking trucks and vans so far but without to much luck. Figures, when I needed a manual 4x4 tranny as a donor for mine, all I could find where 2wd auto's. Now I need a 2wd auto and everyone is getting off their 4x4 manuals. atleast time is on my side. It's just a spare ride for me and the wife. No hurry to get her done.

E4OD was used from 89-98 behind the 300, 302, 351, 460, 5.4L, 7.3L IDI and 7.3L PSD

A 300, 302 and 351 tranny will bolt up to your 302, and 95-97 has all the upgrades from the factory.
