Downshifting hurt transmission?

I find myself locking out overdrive coming off of the freeway for additional engine braking as I slow for a stop. Opinions (knowledge is even better!) on whether this is OK for the transmission?

Brakes are cheap and are intended to be a wear item.

Engines and transmissions are not. Anything you can do to reduce their wear and tear will prolong their life.

Pick your poison...

I too tend to believe that kicking off the overdrive is a good way to slow down. There was a discussion about this in the Lightning section. I think that the general consensus is to leave the button alone. FactoryTech, who appears to have a good amount of experiance with Ford transmissions highly reccomends leaving the button alone unless your towing something up a hill.

I just leave the button alone now.

Thanks for the responses. I guess brakes are cheaper.
