Question Leaking Rear Differential

Need some advise. The rear differntial on my 2005 F150 FX4 (20,000 mls) looks like it's pushing out grease (it's not dripping though). I have no idea for how long that's been going on. Is that a common problem and do I have to be concerned about it?

Howdy and welcome!

Where is your leak? The pinion seal (where the driveshaft comes in from), or around the rear cover seal?

Which engine do you have?

Thanks for the welcome - this web site is great!
It's a 5.4l engine. The leak appears to to be around the rear cover seal.

Change the gasket on the rear cover.

Does it even have a rear gasket. I've read other post that the rears don't have a gasket. Or is that with certain rears.

Some do, some don't. I think that one does tho. If it doesn't, you use RTV on it instead.

Change your diff. lube while you are at it. I try to inspect my undercarriage every couple thousand miles just to watch for leaks. I've got 17K miles on my 4x4 Screw lariat.

It sounds like it's just the RTV sealant coming out...as long as it's not leaking, I wouldn't mess with it until its time to change it.

Rear dif fluid is thick. Maybe you think it looks like grease, but it really is the fluid.

I would think he would of reached under the rig and touched it. Maybe he could take a pic of it for us.

If it actually is leaking, with an '05 with only 20k miles, why not run it in to the dealer and let them deal with it? Should be well within warranty.
