gray sludge inside tranny
I changed the fluid in my '02 F-150 yesterday. It was about 15k overdue.
When I dropped the pan the inside was covered in a thin layer of a dark gray sludge. I wiped out the inside of the pan, it took a few paper towels to get it shiny. The inside of the filter was dark gray also so I changed it. The fluid was still red, although when I wiped off the dipstick it was a bit more orange than bright red.
I don't tow, but sometimes I do have a heavy right foot. I haven't noticed any slipping, except when I get on it the shift from 1-2 used to be very hard, for the last 20k or so it's softer. The TC lockup works, I verified that with the tach.
Is this sludge indicative of impending failure or normal wear?
