newbie trans temp question

Hey guys, I bought the edge tuner a couple of weeks ago and decided to make transmission temperature one of my parameters. I have read every old post I can find about "normal" transmission temps. but I still dont know exactly what is correct. Today I drove 3 miles expressway and 7 miles city, and my temp stayed between 160 and 170. It got all the way up to 176 for a short time. Is this normal. I will be pulling a camper this fall and I am allready getting worried. Does it make a difference that it was 91 degrees outside? I just dont ever remember TFT getting that warm before. Any input would greatly be appreciated. thanks

Those are normal temps. Expect them to get a bit higher towing. Anything under 220°F is fine.

those seem about normal, on my 03 after the cooler, i see about 130-140 in city and 100 on the highway, so add about 30 for what my cooler is droping the temps an i would be about the same as you, and yes your temp will be alittle higher the hoter it gets outside

Ok...I'll ask it.

Where are you measuring the transmission temperature? Trans fluid pan? Output line to the radiator? Output of the trans cooler?

Depending upon where you measure makes all the difference in the world. For example, my sensor is basically on the output line, and I have seen temps almost at 260*. Some measure in the pan, which may be a lot cooler. The question I guess is where is the most effective place to measure the temp, for what we want to accomplish: trailer towing while maintaining and extending the transmission life? I for one prefer to measure at the absolute max, but it would be nice to measure the fluid as it returns to the transmission.

Thanks,
John

I guess to answer the question from NCCAMPER, i really dont know where the edge gets its information other than the computer, when it comes down to it your guess is as good as mine.

I'd also be interested to know where the OEM sensor is located. I just got the EDGE, and also have the TFT as one of the display settings.

The OEM sensor is on the valve body, inside the pan.

Is that true also for the 1997-2003 models?

Yes, it's true on all years of 4R70W, AODE, 4R100, and E4OD.
