Question Transmission Cooler

Hi, First thanks for all of the great info that is shared on this site.

I have a 2002 F-150 4.6. I have taken very good care of it. It has about 51,000 miles, it is about due for a trans fluid change. Would there be any benefits to adding a transmission cooler? It seems like cheap insurance against trans failure. It is only driven in town and no towing.

Thanks, John

If your truck was manufactured with the towing package, it already has a pretty good cooler and you won't gain much by adding another.

Look under the truck and in front of the radiator to see what, if anything you have.

If there isn't one already there, then adding one would definitely help cool the tranny fluid which would be expected to increase the life of the tranny.

Driving in town is when the fluid gets the hottest. If you don't already have a cooler, you should get one!

Like was said, if you have the 'tow package', you get one.... I don't understand why they are not standard regardless of what package you get.... Well, they are with the 5.4, but not with the 4.6 for some reason....

Anyway, my trans gets the HOTTEST in city driving, followed by towing...

I'm running the stock cooler that came with my truck and it'll get to 180* with no load on the truck at all in the summer time. The good thing is, is that it'll only go to 180* when I'm towing as well, so I know the cooler is doing it's thing.

If you don't have a cooler already, get one. If you have one, your are good to go!

I'm just about ready to roll 158,000 miles on mine (E4OD however) so I can say the cooler makes a difference!

yeah if you don't have one already get one! I put one on another truck of mine a few years ago and a B&M Supercooler was only like $60 and came with everything I needed and only took about 30 min of actual work once I got everything lined out.

I am going to upgrade mine to the kind with the fan on it soon but that is because I tow and offroad alot. They are one upgrade worth the small price to me. JMO
