2003 fx4 not downshifting too smooth!

I guys, I have a 2003 fx4 with a 5.4 and I have noticed when I am coming to a stop, it appears to downshift rather strange. Specifically, If I am crusing along and I have to come to a stop, I will slowly start to brake. The strange thing is, as the truck is slowing down it, it will downshift through every gear dropping the engine rpm's down to about 500 or so and then it will rapidly jump to about 800 rpm's. This happens through every gear until I am at a complete stop. If I were not to see my tach jump and hear the motor everytime this happens, it would be hardly noticed just through the feel of the truck when downshifting. This concerns me because my 1997 Mercury Mountaineer does not downshift in this manner. It simply holds a constant rpm through downshifting until it is to a complete stop. Just wondering if this problem I am having with my f-150 appears to be normal or not? Thanks guys, DaveK.

Hmm, sounds weird. I don't know much about the Ford F-150 transmissions, but I do know of something that may work.

Unhook your battery from the truck, let it sit around 20 minutes. Hook it back up, then take it for a drive on the freeway/interstate. This will reset the trucks computer, and it will re-learn shift timing points, including downshifts.

Hope that helps, if not. Good luck with it.

I was wondering if you know if reseting the computer would help for my situation? My wife usually drives the truck around town and on the highway, but never with a load. This past weekend while pulling the boat it didn't seem to shift into 1st when it should without really pushing down on the accelorator. Does this sound like the computer was "learning" her driving patterns and then when being used for a diferent application it didn't know what to do?

Thanks.

Flareford150, I have good news. After 300 miles my truck, it is now downshifting more normal. Thanks for the help. Dave K.
