Major 5-speed Problem. Help!!!
Major 5-speed Problem. Help!!!
I've recently had a lot of problems with mis-shift. Ie: I can't get into a specific gear sometimes. It's things like when I have to take around a minute to get it into reverse. That was prob'ly the worst. And, my occasional 3 to 4 mis-shift. It won't let me into 4 or 5, so I have to slow down, shift to 2nd, then proceed through the gears. It only happens around 1-2 times per month, but that's often enough to have me worried. Any ideas? Is my truck PMS'ing? (Just kidding, please don't take offense to that)

As for the Mercon ATF, OK. I'll do that ASAP.
Thanks, man.

I think it was 4 quarts, but just fill till you can't put anymore in. A hand pump or suction gun makes the job go real fast. Don't lose the washers on each plug.

Just curious. How do you drive the truck?
My '98 had about the same mileage when it started getting pretty hard to shift. I drove that truck fairily hard. Mostly fast. I tend to believe that the syncronizers are the cause. I traded the '98 when it had 60k on it so I don't know if it got a lot worse or what.
Changing the fluid did help a bit for me. In the short run anyhow.
I hope you find a solution. I ended up getting an automatic and even with the fickle shifting in the '98, I really miss driving a stick. The F150 I've got now would go real nice with a six-speed. If I only had the money!
Good luck!

OK, thanks. I don't drive the truck hard, but the previous owner most likely did (The clutch seems almost as if it's going out, and there's plenty of damage to the truck body...prob'ly someone's personal vehicle turned personal work truck, in the wrong type of truck.)
Is there a place where I can get the Mercon ATF Changed for me, 'cause I don't have the tools to do it myself (Grease gun or something...)
Thanks

Press the clutxh to the floor and rev the engine to 2000 rpm. Try shifting into 1st and Reverse. Go from 1st to reverse and back again 4-5 times. If it grinds it is most likely clutch disengagement problems. Try bleeding the slave cylinder.

Use some mobile1 syn. atf its so simple to do. Take off drain plug and fill plug. let it empty. Buy a cheap hand pump at autozone and some mobil1 atf and simply pump 3.75 quarts back in or until it begins to come out the fill plug.. 10 minutes of your time well spent..
I have over 170,000 miles on my 5 speed and all OEM even the clutch and i have no problems shifting ever....

It's very easy. A suction gun would make it a bit cleaner, but if you don't have one you don't need it.
Tools required:
-a crescent wrench
-a funnel with a piece of long rubber tubing on it.
-something to catch the old fluid
-rags to wipe things up with
-(not 100% needed but recommended- a buddy to pour new fluid while you hold the hose into the transmission)
Just position a drain pan or whatever you're using to catch the fluid, open both of the plugs, when it stops flowing put in the bottom plug back in, put the rubber tube into the filler hole and route it up through the engine compartment. Attach the funnel and fill'er up! Then put the top plug in and you're done.
You probably don't even have to jack it up unless you're fat like me

Always remove the fill plug first. For the simple reason that if it is stripped and you cannot get it off you will not be able to easly fill the tranny back up.
I have had this happen once on my son's car. Luckly we were able to fix it and then proceed to draining the tranny.
