I was told to use TransX

A coworker of mine who considers himself kinda a wrench head,,,is telling me to subsitute a quart of Mercon V with a quart of TransX during my next fluid change on my 99 5.4 auto 4R70W 3.55ls. What do you all think?

No. Have no idea what it is, but your tranny was designed to only have Mercon V in it.

Actually, it was designed for regular Mercon at the time of manufacture, but Ford has approved the use of Mercon V in the 4R70 as a replacement fluid.

If you want to use an ATF supplement, go for the correct Lubeguard additive. I don't have any info on the TransX additive.

Yeah after they figured out that no friction modifiers in the fluid from 94-97 was causing too many problems. I'm sure the origional powertrain engineers spec'ed Mercon V, but the bean counters said just use what the E4OD runs.

Nothings wrong with the tranny, thank God. He just likes TransX a whole bunch and highly recommended it to me with my next fluild change. Told me to substitute one quart of TransX for one quart of fluid.

jadensdad; you may want to check your trans or owners manual. If you have the 5.4 I don't think you have the 4R70W. I thought the 5.4 came with a beefier trans.

Oh here we go again.....

This is a current research project and what we have found so far.

97-98 5.4s have the E4OD
99-03 F150 7700's, Lightning's, and a few random F150 5.4s have the 4R100
Most 99-03 F150 5.4's do have the light duty 4R70w.

I don't know what tranny exactly I have. I think my truck is sort of a freak model that Ford came out with. Perhaps it's the production date issue. About 2 years ago when I first changed the tranny fluid, I had to go back to the auto parts store twice to get the correct filter/gasket. When asked what size engine, I told the guy behind the counter 99 F150 5.4 auto. After finally finding the correct filter it's off the same year/make/model just with the 4.6. Not sure where the issue is,,,,,,
