Transmission fluid

What transmission fluid would you recommend for a standard transmission in 2001 F150 V6/4.2L?

Howdy and welcome!

I use plane ole Mercon ATF in the M5OD's with hundreds of thousands of miles total no problem.

Standards use mercon too! My 91 called for mercon, but after having it rebuilt, the tranny shop said to just run a good synthetic 30 weight in it.

look max i'm sorry that we're all not as smart as you
when the term "standard" tranny comes up i naturally assume gear oil
not tranny fluid.. i grew up in the '60's and '70's..and gear oil went in standards...ever try to shift a toploader with tranny fluid in it?

neither did i...

ahhhhhhh but what do i know compared to you?
but i do know this...

you can continue to analize everything i type and thats your option
we never stop learning do we?

Since when is a "standard" not a stick shift/manual tranny? Most of my vehicles have been standards and not one got tranny fluid. Hmm. Now that I think of it my F150 is the only vehicle I have ever had with an automatic. Do I use gear oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid or what in it?

Aight, not sure what is goin on here, but simply follow this. The ZF5, ZF6, M5OD-R1, and M5OD-R2 get Mercon ATF for fluid.

Most 80's and early 90's manual vehicles use gear oil too. My 87 Cherokee 5 spd used 90W.
Ever try to pump 90W when it's 10 degrees outside. 5 hours later it is to the trans.

BTW don't let maxie pad get to you, he never said what he would use. He probably never checks his. Likely doesn't know what a trans is, where to find it, much less where to check it. His post was just a useless non-informative waste of bandwidth.
He's googleing now to try and find something so he can try to look smart.

There is no need to deteriote this thread into a spat.
Look in the upper right of the posters inital post.
It says 2001 v6/4.2.
The spec fluid is Mercon for that truck.
If anyone wants so use gear oil, thats fine but don't complain how the trans shifts and especially in cold temps.

Yes it is very tasty. Whenever I have leftover from the mustang, I use it as salad dressing also. It saves money and its quite convenient too.
