shifting question

my transmission was recently rebuilt but a well know shop. Now, when shifting from 1st to 2nd, there is a "slide" and then harsh bump. Like it comes out of gear, hesitates, and then slams into 2nd gear. They can't seem to figure out what it is. Finally they rebuilt it from scratch all over with another new valve body, electronics, acutators, etc..etc. Still does it. Has anyone experienced this same symptoms? Any tips/ideas? I've had the truck to them 6 times over the past 4 months and it's still not fixed. This last time I told them that they get one more chance to fix it and if they don't get it right I'll be taking it somewhere else to be fixed and they will have to foot the bill and if they give me any grief about it I'll sue them. This is when they agreed to overhaul the tranny completely again. No dice...picked it up yesterday and it's still doing it.

Background: Tranny was fine except for some torque converter shudder and slight "washboard" feel to it in 2nd gear. This is why they did the overhaul in the first place.

Truck is a 2002 F150 Screw 4x4 Lariat w/4R70W. 70k miles.

Ask them if they replaced the module on the external of the transmission. I had a 93 E-250 and the tranny guy rebuilt it and I got it back sure enough after a week wont shift into 2nd take it back he rips it out again says all fixed I drive it a month and back to not shifting in 2nd, now I am pissed pull the module off and the plug and module were corroded beyond belief drop a new module and plug in and bam not a problem.

I don't know that i have that same module on this tranny. It's electronically controlled and I believe the electronics are inside the tranny. They did replace the electronics though.

Yes, you do have it. It's called the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS.) It's located on the driver's side of the transmission, where the shifter cable attaches.

I have seen this part called many many different things. Neutral safety switch is the most common for the parts stores. I always called it the manual Lever postion sensor or transmission range sensor. It could very well cause the problem.

On an E4OD it's about a $100 dealer part (it's on the driver side of the transmission, about a foot back from the engine where the shift linkage goes into the case), the installation does involve an adjustment procedure but as long as your careful you shouldn't have too much problem.
