1988 F-150 manual
1988 F-150 manual
I just purchased a truck for use on the farm and I've got a couple questions.
First, it's a 1988 F-150 with the straight 6 engine and (I'm told and it looks like) a 3/4 ton back end. I assume it was replaced at some point. It has a manual transmission.
The stick has OD, but I can't find it. My guess is that the tranny was replaced when the back end was. So I think I've got a 4 speed.
As mentioned, the stick is very lose. Even when it's in gear the thing wiggles all over. Fourth gear is a little tough to find because of this (hard to get in-between 2nd and Reverse when the stick has so much play). When I drove it the first time I accidently hit reverse when I was doing about 45mph, and it ground for a moment before I got it out. Reverse now doesn't seems to work all that well, and I'm not sure if I damaged it or if it was that way when I got it. Reverse seemed to work fine the first couple times I used it ... but this morning, while it did move in reverse, it would grind a bit and slip out when I got above idle speed.
A couple questions: 1) What can I do to tighten up (remove the play from) the stick? 2) What should I look at to determine what kind of tranny I have? 3) Any guesses as to how much it would cost to have the tranny re-built? Or should I try to do something to the tranny myself? Any tips/suggestions are appreciated. I'm mechanically inclined, but never done much with transmissions.
Thanks for any help.

Count the bolts that hold the cover on the rear diff.
Also, does the tranny look like this? It's an M5OD.

Here's the passenger side view of a NP-435, thanks to 81bronk36.

Sorry I don't have a pic of a T18/19 but it's a beefy cast iron monster.
