Pictures of a 4wd 4r100 cross member

Could someone post some pictures of the cross member in a 4wd expedition or f-150.
I am swapping from a 4.6/ 5 speed to a lightning 5.4/ 4r100. The 4r is approx 6 inches longer than the old transmission. I can repostion my transmission crossmember but it looks like the move will put the transfer case right on top of the the crossmember that the torsion bars are attached.

Do they use different length torsion bars in those models or is the mount made in such a way that the Xfer case clears it?

I can fabricate different mounts but would rather use a Ford part if I could.

I have looked for pics in many galleries but can only find pics of exhaust systems just behind the mounts.
If anyone has pics or could take a couple I would appreciate it otherwise its off to the used car lot with my trusty digital camera.

Thanks, Mark mwobser@verizon.net

I'm guessing a superduty crossmember pic won't help?

I'm having a similar issue with my '95 F150. My 5 speed is 5 inches shorter than the auto I removed. There's a different mount for every configuration. I called a Ford dealer today without much help. They could only tell me what I already knew. Maybe for your newer truck they'll have more info. Believe it or not the crossmembers only ranged from $60.78 to $111.00 and all were available they just couldn't tell me which one. If what your doing matches a factory setup in some way, you'll be able to find your mount. So far I have the original auto 4x4 mount that is low enough for transfer case flange clearance, but is shaped to fit a part of the frame that is 5 inches further back than the my trans. mount. I also have a 5 speed mount from a 4x2 that puts the transfer case flange into the floor but is in the right place on the frame. I'm most likely modifying this mount if my trip to the bone yard is unsuccessful tommorow. One more thing, I e-mailed a few people who are selling 92-96 F150 4x4 5 speeds on ebay and asked for pics. Out of four or five people, two are sending me pics. Hope this helps.

Mark, I am not sure that having a picture of a 4x4 will help.

When I converted my 93 to 4x4 the 4x4 e40d had a different set up than the 2wd E40d. The e40d and 4r100 have the same case, the tailshafts are different and thats where the crossmember bolts.

The 97 and 98s had e40ds behind the 5.4. I would look for these years. I am not sure on all of the years for the expedition.

Are you putting a short shaft and 4x4 tail housing on the 4r100. That is the only way I see to have a crossmember to bolt in. Other wise you have a 2wd transmission that needs a 2wd crossmember but you have a 4x4 frame/susp. that needs a 4x4 crossmember.

JMG, just get the mount that you need. If you need a mount for a 5-speed 4x4 get that. It will bolt up. If you notice you will have holes in the frame further up from where the existing cross member is. The 5-speed 4x4 crossmember will bolt in these holes, kind of like you found out with the 2wd. The 4x4 5 speed xmember will be just right.

While working under the truck today, I noticed another set of holes that were approx. 5 inches farther back on the frame. The pattern appeared to match holes for the torsion bar mount. This leads me to believe that there more than one length of torsion bar.
If this is the case it may be a matter of moving my present torsion bar support to these holes and getting longer torsion bars. Doubt I will be that lucky but its worth checking in to.

That still doesn't do anything for mounting the tranny, so I tend think there is a different cross member for the different tranny.
If new ones are that cheap, I'll just find the right one and order it. I'll just have to track done the right vehicle and get the VIN off of it. My parts guy at Ford is real by the book and doesn't appreciate the value of swapping.

I am converting the tranny from a 2wd to a 4wd unit. This involves changing the output shaft and tail housing. Even after that is done the transmission is still longer than my 5 speed.

Adrian-I'd like to see your super duty cross member. Might not be the same but it may give me an idea of what it should look like.

Does anyone know if there are different lengths torsion bars based on the transmission length?

Thanks, Everyone

I think the difference in torsion bar length is for the F250 LIGHT DUTY model..... This is basically a 1997-2003 F150 with beefed up suspension and such to make the GVWR of the truck more then the standard F150. The GVWR of these rigs are #7700.

I have a 1997 F150 4x4 Super Cab, Short Bed with the E4OD trans... Sorry, I don't have a pic of the crossmember setup on it.....

Thanks, JMC

I have found that I can use the torsion bars to a 7700 f150 which are 5 inches longer. There are already holes in the frame to relocate the torsion bar mount.
I believe f-150 and expeditions with the 4r100 all have the longer torsion bars and will continue to investigate if this is true.
I have some part numbers for the 7700 bars and will be ordering them next week.

My bars were a pain to get out. I ended up torching them five inches from the lower control arm and using a sledge hammer to drive them forward thru the arm.
Hopefully, I will have some smooth sailing until I get to the wiring and PCM change.
Thanks, Mark

I took the pic of my diesels cross member, but l have no way to get it off my camera as I left my card reader back in my dorm room. Your the third person needing one of my pics, and I have two tech writeups to finish, so I'll try to get a card reader tomarrow for ya.

If this helps the numbers stamped in are F81A5060BF 01 303

I have a 99' F-250Ld 4X4 with the 4R100. I have a digital camera. I'll try to find a dry spot and take a couple pictures if someone doesn't beat me to it. I'd have to learn how to attach pictures to a posted message or I could attach to an E-mail.

raisin, go to www.supermotors.org and open a free account there. Easy to load your truck pics and then just copy the link to here.

Or just open a gallery here. Even easier and not another password to remember.

I dont know as much about the post 97 models. I have a 94. But i thought lightning models were only 2 wheel drive. I dont know of any difference in suspension types like if they used torsion bars as well or if it was completly different in post 97 2 wheel drive models vs 4 wheel drive models. So its no suprise to me that it doesnt exactly bolt right up.
