O/D issue

1999 F150 5.4 4x4 with 4r70W auto tranny. 88000 well-maintained miles. I'm up-to-date on all maintenance and the tranny fluid is approximately 5000 miles old. Tranny fluid is at the proper level and still nice and red.

The problem happened last night as I was driving home at approximately 45-50 mph on a flat road. The truck was in O/D and I took my foot off the gas to slow down a bit and as I did, the tranny downshifted roughly. I put my foot back on the gas and it shifted right back into O/D. I took my foot off the gas again and it downshifted roughly again. It did this about 5 more times and then it began shifting normally again. I drove it around all day today and it is just fine....shifting smooth as ever. I have never had any indicator lights or tranny problems.

Is this something I should worry about? I am about to drive the truck 750 miles home for Christmas and don't want to be stranded somewhere if this is an indication that the tranny is about to croak. Should I disconnect the battery to reset the computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if it's driving fine today then i would disregard it as a temporary hicup.

i have heard of an o/d problem where it turned into neutral once reaching o/d speed. the truck was still driveable with o/d turned off but the transmission did end up needing to be rebuilt.
