1998 Navigator 4x4 Problem

Hey guys,

Just looking for a little help. I have a 98 Navigator and the 4 wheel drive won't engage. The light comes on, but by my truck's performance in the snow, the 4 wheel drive isn't working. Any ideas before I invest big money in some repair?

Make sure that the actuator is engaging all the way. You can see this under the truck in front of the front differential. There is a plastic guard in front of it. Take a big screw driver and flash light and have someone go back and forth on the 4x4 shifter or switch. I bought some PB Blaster andf squirted the living hell out of mine, even went under that rubber boot, and then had my daughter go from 2H to 4H to 4L, and kept doing this all the while helping the rod along until it smoothed out.

Hopefully this is your problem. I've also read here about the rubber hose that runs from the firewall, down to the vacuum swith causing the problem.

Thanks so much for the input. I will try out those "fixes" this weekend and let you know what happens.

Same system. Should work if that is the problem.

As stated above, first thing to check for (and the easiest) are the 2 vacuum lines. My lines had cracks & a huge hole in 'em located right by the battery. They get brittle and are succeptible to cracks/holes just by moving them.

Also, for the new members here, use the SEARCH feature and there will be enough info to have a cup of coffee and like 2 or 3 smokes before you read it all.

Good luck with your 4x4 problems and keep us posted!
