Rear End trouble?
Rear End trouble?
98 F150 off road 4wd package. Put truck into reverse and started to back up. Went a few feet then loud clunking and shuttering from what I believe the rear end. Truck grinds a lot and barely can back up, forward is slow. Only drove to get out of street and a few feet forward and reverseto see what was happening. Any ideas or anyone else have this happen. Am waiting for a flatbed to get it to a shop.
Thanks

Sounded like brake drag at low speed. Once out of first. then seemed normal. Mechanics dismissed as normal from heavy duty rear end. Once before, when I put in reverse, it seemed to take a second to go, then a little jump then normal. All else seemed fine. Never any trouble shifting and truck ran like a dream.
So far, spider gears are shot. Looking at replacing with "salvaged" rear end or new gear nest. Questioning integrity of transmission as it was hard to get going during test drive. Hoping it was due to large effort required to move truck with bad gears and not that tranny wants to start off in 2nd or 3rd.
I have read alot of other posts with similar trouble. Is this a "thing" with this type of truck. It looked great on the car lot 4 months ago when I bought it.
Any advice?

Working on replacing the gears. TRANNY is also throwing check engine codes for temp low input and solenoid trouble. It was replaced about 10k ago. Should be under warranty (parts at least.) Maybe rear end let go and took trans with it? I can't believe this.
Body and frame look in great shape and engine runs like a dream ( for now) Any way to tell if maybe this truck has way more miles than the odometer says. There was no paperwork indicating anything was altered, in fact all p'work is in order certifying odometer reading. I hope this is not going to always be a POS. I'm not quite in the position to keep buying new trucks every few months now.

2 Transmissions and a rear end in how many miles?
It would seem the mechanic who owned the truck before you must have pulled an extremely heavy trailer or something.
Hell just drive it through the front window of the shop.
