Question Trans Swap

Hey all. Its been awhile since I've been here. First off I have a 92 F150 ext cab 5.0 4X4 borg warner 13-56 E4OD thats been rebuilt twice to the tune of $1200 each time. I am looking to swap in a manual (say 5 speed). I have done this with a 90 ranger I still own. My question is what trans am I looking for (what is a direct bolt in as far as the bell housing & trans case)?
I know I need all of the other manual stuff like peddals drive shafts ect. But there are no articles for these swaps that I can find (like my ranger).
If any one knows of any out there please email me @ bigbasshb@yahoo.com
Thanks in advance.

Best thing to do is to look for a complete manual tranny truck to make the swap. Probably looking for a 88- 93 or so 4x4. Honestly that is the easiest way to do this. Having the whole truck makes it a lot easier to have all of the components right there. Then you can turn the truck around sell the rest of it with the old tranny in the bed. Did this swap on my brothers 91 with my old and wrecked 88 manual. The hardest part is probably the pedal box because the rest of it is the typical transmission swap. If you are slick, you can even hook up the reverse lights and use the neutral safety switch for the clutch ignition defeat. We did the reverse lights but passed on the clutch safety switch.

I would recomend, at least a new slave cylinder and possibly even a new master cylinder for the clutch. Of course a new clutch pressure plate and throw out bearing is a must. If you re going to do it do it right the first time.

By the way, I think the trans you want is a M5OD but not sure. You will probably just have to shorten your rear driveshaft a little bit and go with the manual front driveshaft.

Good luck with the swap should you decide to do it.

the m5od would be the most economicle swap for you and im pretty sure the transfercase swaps between all tranmissions of that generation but if you can find a zf5 it would be stronger

ive swaped 2 f150s from auto to m5od without parts vehicles just a few trips to the junk yard and it is pretty easy and can be done very cheaply if your "good"

Thanks for the info. As i said in last post I have done this with a 90 Ranger. What I didn't say was it was from a junk yard truck( the guys i work with will let me get all of the parts I need from several trucks) for about $500 & that includes transfer case but i needed to do some homework on the manual trans. You know strengths & weaknesses. & I would rather keep my newly rebuilt transfer case, as it has some mods.

Woooppps. Did I read that right M5OD. Thats the same trans I have in my Ranger its actually mazdas M5OD R1. Are we talking the same trans? Its bulletproof in my 4 banger ranger but put it behind the 5.0 with 4x4 and 6800 gvw that seems like its not gonna last any longer than my auto trans.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Now for the ZF5 I've never heard of it do you know what years to look for.

M5OD-R2 was/is used behind the 300six, 302V8, 4.2V6, and 4.6V8.

ZF-5 is an ultra heavy duty fivespeed found behind the 460, 7.3L, and 351s.

Master list of ford trannys and the years used can be found here...
