4x4 prob

2001 F150 Offroad 105k mi. I don't really use the 4wd in the non snow months, so I like to run around with it in 4h every now and then just to keep things loose. The other day I shifted it into 4h @ 40 mph and instead of the usual barely noticable feeling of it kicking in, it felt like I was hauling a ton of rocks. The motor felt like it bogged down, and I heard a low pitched whine. Realizing something wasn't right, I shifted back out of 4h to 2h and it wouldn't disengage until I came to a stop. I don't really feel like talking it to a mechanic, having it not do the same thing for him, wasting my money, and then have the same problem again back home, so I thought I'd pick your brains. Thanks ahead of time!

Even though it is a shift on the fly transfer case, forty is a little to high for me. Heck I like to be stopped to keep as much strain off the driveline as possible. Think of the extreme forces for a driveline to go from 0 to 40 in an instant.

Usually the electronic shift on the fly transfer case won't disengage untill you get out of the throttle, and the hubs for the manual and ESOF trucks wont disengage untill you back up.

It almost sounds like it went into 4lo instead of 4hi. Which shouldn't happen. Sounds more like the transfer case rather than the front diff. (there are no hubs to lock/unlock, all done at diff and TC). At 40 (if possible) in 4lo the engine would be screaming.
As far as speed, owners manual states any speed up to 55. And I have shifted to 4hi at that speed with no problem. Big reason I think they say limit to 55 is all the parts going from 0-55 instantly. Too hard on them.
As to why it wouldn't unlock, not sure. I have had to get off the gas to get things unlocked before (or it seemed that way), but never had to stop, unless I was getting out of 4lo.

It was on gravel. There's a stretch of gravel/mud road about a mile and a half long that when it's raining i'll take it just to give the 4wd some use in the off season months.
