Well we are all in the dark here so I'll just make a stupid comment to end my day. What if the computer has thrown a code but the freakin CEL is burnt out? It's not exactly a new truck, no insult intended, but stuff does quit working after a while. A trip to the dealer for a good diagnostic might be in order. Good Luck

To know what transmission you have, count the pan bolts, the E4OD has 20 and the AOD has 14. That will settle that question.
As to the bogging down, I think that kind of strange myself, if the tranny was slipping, you should see higher RPMs, sort of like it "let go" for lack of a better term. I'm guessing a bearing or the forward/and or/ overdrive planet could be damaged, but that usually makes a lot of noise for a very short time. I'd say get it scanned for any codes, with a code I can be a lot more help.

Hope this helps,

G

Heck easier than crawin under is the E4OD has an overdrive lockout switch (like mentioned in my previous link) and the AOD don't.

Does the CE light come on when first turing the key to on? If so, it's good.

The CEL is working fine when the key is turned over. I guess I just need to know what input the tranny sends to the computer via sensors so I can rule out the 20-50 dollar fix before I take it to a shop. I just hate doing that. I am pretty confident the engine is in good working order, It has to be something with the tranny or the torque converter. I just don't know anything about automatic transmissions.

I am wondering if the transmission is starting off in 2nd or 3rd gear instead of 1st. Will the transmission shift into higher gears as you accelerate? I still think you have an engine problem. Even the poorest tuned engine will rev up just fine in park or neutral. Does the truck have power in reverse or on the highway??

I don't think its starting out in another gear. It still shifts through the gears. As far as the engine is concerned, I checked the compression, all cylinders are around 170 - 190 psi. I checked fuel pressure, its around 37 psi. As I said before, I replaced all regular tune up items. It purrs like a kitten idleing and revving up while in park or neutral. I just don't get it. Thanks for your input though.

No cap and rotor??? On a 91 302? My dad's 91 302 had a cap and rotor.

This really does sound like an engine problem to me. I would throw a timing light on it. I would also think about the ingnition module on the distributor. I have seen several fords from the mid 80's through the early 90's have a very similar problem. It will run fine for a while then all of a sudden, you have to shove it to the floor to make 25 mph. It usually starts as intermittent then becomes a more on than off problem until it finally dies.

good luck.
