What type of transmission...?

Hey all. I have a '97 5.4 4x4. I am trying to buy a Transgo shift kit but I don't know what tranny I have. I am seeing either a 4R70W SK-AODE or a 4R100. Which one do I have...?

Look at the trans code in the door jam and look it up in a thread on here that is about trans types.

Here is a link to a useful thread.

From what I have read in this forum the 4R100 didn't come out until the 98 model year when it replaced the e4OD....

Yup, just check the link VWtrucker posted. It will either be the E4OD or 4R70w to help you out.

Hey mods, how bout a sticky for that link... nudge...

You have the E4OD which is all but the same as the 4R100 (we changed the name that year along with the usual year to year updates).

And with all modesty, I think I make a much better kit than the TransGo.

Do a search for Factory Tech Valve Body or just FTVB, I don;t know of anyone who didn't like it.

Don't be modest Greg.
Your FTVB is the best. Thanks

You're going to have to replace the whole valvebody in that thing the pre 96 valvebodies are crap and you need a set of pins to line up the new valvebody correctly.

Hey guys. I checked my door jam but still no luck on finding out what type of tranny I have. My door jam only tells me my GVR, wheel info, and my VIN. Where else can I find my tranny model?

Call a dealer and ask for the parts dept. Ask if they can look it up by the VIN #. They should be able tell you what it left the factory with. Several dealers in the Houston area will do this no problem, a few won't...

It is right in the middle at the bottom of the sticker under TRANS. Nothing to do with the vin. E4OD is E and 4R70w is U just like in my link.

But the dealer can look up the vin in their computer system and tell you what it left the factory with.
