Question 96 F150 auto shifting lever

The handle on my shifter swings free inside the dash. I checked the visible bolt (star) and it is tight the problem is further up under the dash.
Can I get to the problem from under the dash or do I have to remove the dash?
How do I remove the dash.
I got home by starting the truck chocking the wheels and shifting from under the truck, don't want to do that again(ended up in low).

I have removed the under dash panel , the instrument cover and the turning signal/steering wheel plastic cover. The shaft for the shifting linkage is broken about 3 inchec from the shifting lever but I cant seen the connection.
Do I have to remove the steering wheel or.....?

thanx
