4R75W Tranny Flush-Cutting Lines?

4R75W Tranny Flush-Cutting Lines?

I have a 2004 Expy with a 4R75W Tranny according to the door pillar. I took it in for a flush today at 31K miles and was told (after two techs stood under there for 20 minutes) that they had to cut the tranny line in order to insert the flush machine lines into the system.

I could tell they haven't done it before by the amount of different people who went under to look.

Is this true. No fittings?

Does anyone recommend for or against this?

I'd double check with the dealer on that one...

None have fittings per sey except into the side of the transmission case and at the radiator.
I don't know how flushing is done at a dealer or an oil change place but what is done is to unhook the return line at the radiator and let the engine pump the converter down through a temp hose attached, then add fresh fluid and pump again until the new fluid come thru clean looking.
Granted this takes more fluid and waists more than the trans capacity actually takes but a seeming short cut costs more in the end than doing the pump-out and dropping the pan, changing the filter and refilling in the absence of a converter drain plug.
There's no real problem cutting the metal line putting a "unoin fitting" in place for the future flushing.
Mine's already cut up for other reasons like trans temp gage, extra aux cooler and convience for flushing etc.

If I were going to go to the trouble ot flush the tranny that way, I would go and get a set of hose barb fittings for adding tranny coolers and a couple feet of hose instead of cutting the lines. Luckily I have a plug in the torque converter so I don't need to do all that to flush the converter.

The manufacturers of transmission flush machines such as BG and Wynns provide all of the necessary fittings and adapters to tap into the cooler lines without having to cut a line. The late model Expeditions require a plastic quick-release tool to disconnect the cooler line.

One thing I found out when they were flushing my trans, is that due to a temperature controled valve, the fluid will not flow to the radiator until it reaches a specific temp. When mine was done, it never reached that temp, no matter how long we let it sit and idle. They had to attach the flush hoses to the trans itself and bypass that valve.

What temp control valve

I changed the fluid in my tranny two times and used compressed air to blow out the cooling lines to the radiator---there was no temp control valve, only an unrestricted line/cooler

Had no problem using the lines to the rad on my 2001. Just could not be done on my 04.

I was just researching this and found a post which referenced a Ford Press release which stated this in reguards to the 4R75W (These trans. where introed for 2005 model year fortunately my Expe came off the line Feb 2004 with one) Also I can not find this transmission listed for scheduled Fluid replacement in my maintance schedule.

I have a 2004 Expedition with 4R75W and was in the process of doing a complete Royal Purple swap. I have the 2004 Ford Expedition Service manual and it stated this for the 4R75E Drain and Refill

Draining, all vehicles using a suitable flush and fill machine

CAUTION: Always refer to the instructions supplied with the flush and fill machine.

NOTE: Draining fluid from the transmission by removing only the fluid pan is acceptable for normal or severe duty fluid maintenance.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
2. Use a suitable flush and fill machine to change the fluid.
3. When connecting the flush and fill machine, connect the machine to the fluid cooler tube after the fluid cooler on the cooler return line. This will help remove any foreign material trapped in the fluid coolers.

Refill

1. Use only clean automatic transmission fluid.
2. Once the fluid exchange has been completed, disconnect the flush and fill machine. Reconnect any disconnected fluid cooler tubes.
3. With the engine running and the transmission at normal operating temperature 66-77°C (150-170°F), check and adjust the transmission fluid level and check for any leaks. If fluid is needed, add fluid in increments of 0.24-liter (0.5-pint) until the correct level is achieved (fluid should be in the cross-hatched area of the fluid level indicator).

Draining, all vehicles not using a suitable flush and fill machine

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
2. Loosen the transmission fluid pan bolts and allow the fluid to drain.

3. After the fluid has drained, remove the transmission fluid pan.

4. Do not remove the fluid filter. It is not necessary to change the fluid filter during a normal maintenance fluid change.
5. Clean and inspect the transmission fluid pan, transmission fluid pan gasket and magnet.

6. Thoroughly flush the cooler tubes. For additional information, refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler — Backflushing and Cleaning in this section.

Refill

1. Position the magnet into the transmission fluid pan.

2. NOTE: The fluid pan gasket is reusable, clean and inspect for damage. If not damaged, the gasket should be reused.

Install the fluid pan and gasket.
1. Position the fluid pan with the gasket in place.
2. Install the bolts.

3. CAUTION: The use of any other transmission fluid can result in the transmission failing to operate in a normal manner or transmission failure.

Fill the transmission.
Add 4.7 liters (5 qts) of clean automatic transmission fluid to the transmission through the fluid filler tube.
4. Start the engine. Move the transmission range selector lever through all the gear ranges, checking for engagements.
5. With the engine running and the transmission at normal operating temperature 66-77°C (150-170°F), check and adjust the transmission fluid level and check for any leaks. If fluid is needed, add fluid in increments of 0.24-liter (0.5-pint) until the correct level is achieved (fluid should be in the cross-hatched area of the fluid level indicator).

Again this was listed in the 2005 Ford Expedition Service Manual, under transmission, 4R70E/4R75E -General Procedures - Drain and Refill

I am not 100% sure this is the same for the 4R75W, however from what I have read the only difference from the 4R75E and W is the gear ratio's.

Im rather disturbed that I can not find any reference in the Ford Service manual about the 4R75W accept in the ident. Codes.

With all that said there is still no mention of a maintance schedule for the 4R75E or 4R75W.
