loss of engagement??

my o2 f-150 4x2 4.6l / automatic trans.[ 4r70w, 3.08 open diff. ]gave me a scare today.

i came to a 4-way stop then made a right turn.

i got on the accelerator a little heavy in the turn & i lost forward drive.

i heared the engine rev up but no torque.

the drive line made deep low vibration / chatter noise.

the noise went away out of turn and it is driving as strong as ever now.

once before [with only 7,000 miles on it] while backing up in a parking lot, i put it in drive and it never engaged until i reved the motor up???
then it drove fine.

now it has 25 k miles & it is out of warranty on the 3/36,000.
i changed the fluid & filter today , it was still cherry red .
no metal in the pan, just fine metal grit on the magnet.

is this going to be a lemon??

I think I would take it in now. It obviously has problems.

Sounds like low fluid in the pan.
Notice it's all severe movement provoked!
Are you sure your HOT level is up between the cross hatch marks or not losing fluid so much that it gets low between checks?
