E4od Replaced And Won't Move
Purchased a used E4OD with 100 day warranty from an off the shelf salvage yard on 7/30. They said it had 72,000 miles on it and provided VIN for the truck it came off of...Pulled pan...beautiful! no fuz and clean fluid. Replaced filter, gasket and rear seal anyway. Either very lucky or very messed up. Installed that weekend and would not move. Pulled it out this weekend. Drained quart off torque converter. Reset converter, bolted up, started, ran through gears with no movement, no noises of any sort...checked fluid level and quart low...assume pumped into converter... filled again and ran through gears. Seems to be in constant neutral...no movement. Turned off. Checked in Park, Reverse, 1, 2, 3. Could not turn rear wheels. Neutral: could turn. Did a fault check and no transmission codes. We could make the old tranny move the truck a little...with this replacement all it does is sit. Either the replacement is bad or I'm not holding my mouth right. CarFAX shows the vin recorded on receipt belonged to an F150 with Odometer 191,870 at last title change in 8/2004...no salvage title. Any suggestions before we pull it off and take it back???

Yes. Noted on first install that would start in Park...not in neutral...looked at book and linkage. Released clip, adjusted (without the $48. tool) with instructions from Haines...noted neutral position. Checked again. started in park and neutral...no movement. Did not check again on 2nd install because we did not move linkage.
I don't either. Not much use for 72k for that matter. 7 quarts in it now. Over full witht he 7th. Checked with fluid at hatch marks on stick, below hatch after draining off the torque convertor and above hatch marks...will not go into any gear..
A completely dry E4OD trans should hold about 14-15 qts. The pump may not be working. Disconnect the rear cooler line at the trans and see if you have any flow with the engine running (trans in Park) You should have enough flow to fill a 1 qt container in about 30 seconds.

Finally had the time to pull the line...after 1 minute with the engine on...running through the gears...barely coated the bottom of a gallon jug with fluid...was under the impression the converter activated the pump...there's no noise and it spun good while installing...suggestions???

The cooler lines need to be flushed out before you install the new transmission. The proper way is with a flushing machine, but at home you can get by with compressed air and some brake clean. Blow through one cooler line and catch the oil coming out of the other cooler line with an empty anti-freeze jug. Then spray brake clean into the line and force it through the cooler lines with air pressure. Repeat this procedure a few times, and then reverse flush the lines. If you don't get much air flow through the lines, you have a restriction or a plugged cooler.

Called salvage yard before removing the trans (requirement on warranty) ...they sent Alfredo out to check on the transmission...While he agreed with the installation method we used (he was here for 3 minutes) told his boss we installed it wrong ... boss nevertheless agreed to replace it.
Now, however, I have a '93, bought a '92 transmission for $625., taking it back for a '91 with 96,000. miles on it (the only one they have at this time and CarFacts shows 100,880). While this might seem better than the '92 they said had 72,000 mi and actually turned out to have over 191,000...it feels like I'm back-sliding (more) if I take their offer for the 91 replacement....
Gut feeling now is to request refund.

Ford made a lot of internal improvements to the E4OD throughout the years. I would not want to end up with an older transmission than what came in your 93 model. If you end up getting a refund you could probably have your original transmission overhauled for just a few hundred more than the cost of the used transmission.
