Trans slips when going from "park" to "drive".

97 Expedition 4.6 4x4. E40D trans I think.

Problem:
The trans takes a long time to engage when shifting from park to drive. Also, when going down the road, when you take your foot off the throttle then push it again, it revs up a 1000+ rpm before finally engaging. Doesn't happen all the time, but it's getting a lot more frequent. Any ideas?

You should have a 4R70W behind a 4.6L. If your fluid level is OK, you most likely have an internal problem with the forward clutches.

So does that mean I need a full rebuild? How much $$$ does it cost to replace the forward clutches?

Also, I have seen things that say I have an E40D, a 4R70W, or a 4R100. Guess in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter...but I think a rebuilt E40D is much more than the others.

If the forward clutches are slipping, you will need a full rebuild. The 4R70W is a little cheaper than an E4OD, but prices will vary quite a bit, depending if you go with a Ford Reman. or an overhaul done at a trans shop. The advantage of going with a Ford Reman. is the 3 yr/36,000 mile warranty, good nationwide.
