Mercon III instead of Mercon IV?

A few years back on thedieselstop there was a powertrain engineer from ford that designed the 4R100 who explained in great detail all the problems that occur because of the friction modifier that is in Mercon V and not Mercon. All I remember was that he said that the E4OD and 4R100 are the only ford trannys that are designed to not have friction modifier in the fluid.
