convert to 4wd
Very!
On the pre 97 it is mostly a direct bolt on swap, but they have simple solid or semi solid axles and can use simple suspension parts.
97 brought the world of independant front suspension with lots of parts packed in there. Just take a lookie under a 4x4. It makes it tricky to just change a clutch or drop an auto tranny.
Much cheaper to just trade for a 4x4.
Now, if your fab skills are sharp, I think it would be really cool to do a solid axle swap. If I had the place to do it, I would take the 97 and throw a Dana 60 from a superduty under there. Another dream would be to get a brand new F150 V6, rip the entire driveline out and use a carbed 460, ZF5, and Dana 60s front and rear. Then take it back into the dealer and say you think that jiffy lube messed up on the last oil change, can you take a look...

The extra weight of the T-case, front driveshaft, differential, halfshafts ect, will offset any traction gains. Go to the Lightning forum to see what they have done to increase traction. To swap to a 4x4 you will need a 4x4 frame. Still want to do it? Let me know.
