4R70W vs 4R100

i know there's another thread on this, but it got sidetracked talking about superchargers.

i want to know how the swap between a 4R70W and a 4R100 would be.

will it bolt right up? are all the lines and connections the same? cross members etc.?

driveshaft lengths different?

Thanks for the help

The lines may be in slightly different locations. The 4R100 is physically bigger than the 4R70W, so you'll probably need a shorter driveshaft. You'll definitely need a PCM from a truck that had a 4R100 from the start; you may need to do a little rewiring as well, not sure.

i have the 4R100 tranny from a 2002 Harley truck, the ECM (computer), and the engine harness. all from the 02 HD truck.

i assume all else i'll need is a new tranny crossmember (is it bolted or rivited in?) and a shorter driveshaft?

thanks for the help

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Nobody can answer this questions for you unfortunately you're gonna have to learn it the hard way.

that doesnt really make much sense at all. if nobody would know and i'd have to learn the hard way i wouldnt even have posted this thread up to get dumb responses like that

i'm sure there's somebody else on this board who has done the swap before, and could let me know the parts i need and what i'm running into.

so far it doesnt seem too bad. needing a ECM and a shorter driveshaft and a tranny cross member isnt a lot of work. its a few parts that needed to be purchased and swapped in. half of which i already have, or have sourced out at the moment

so now if anybody has any real feedback, thanks in advance for posting up

Every swap is not going to be the same, a little common sense would tell you to compare vehicles. Your asking us to tell you what all you need when what you need to do is get to work and figure it out. Don't forget you need a different flexplate as well, the wiring harness will have to be completely changed, the cooler lines will have to be replaced or modified. Sorry it's just not going to be as easy as you want it to be.

well i'm not asking anybody to tell me exactly how the swap will go with my truck and every single last thing i will run into

i'm asking how this swap goes. what parts i will need. i highly doubt one person would need a new crossmember yet another person could use the 4R70W cross member. it would be one or the other, and i posted up to find that out.

wiring - i have the full wiring harness for a 02 HD
computer - i have the computer for a 02 HD
cooler & lines - i should be getting all those as well with the tranny from the 02 HD
driveshaft - getting a custom one made at a local shop
cross member - will source one out

So as you can see, you saying i wont learn anything from posting up a question like this and i will have to learn the hard way and just go into this blind was totally wrong
yes i may run into a few small things here or there, but the majority of the stuff is answered. you can re-read my original post, i had a few simple questions that anybody who did this swap could help with. thats the point of these forums. i guess you havent been here long enough to learn that. its not to just tell everybody the obvious that every project will be a little different, and then to stop asking questions and just go do it and figure chit out the hard way, these forums are to post up and try to learn as much as possible before or during a project something like this.

that being said. what exactly is a flex-plate. where does it go?

i'm getting a full new engine & tranny together, so would it be included in there then?

thanks for the help

The flexplate is a large, circular disc that bolts the back of the crankshaft. It's the equivalent of the flywheel in a manual transmission vehicle. In addition to connecting the engine's crank to the transmisison input, it has teeth machined into the outer periphery that match the starter gear.

thanks. so then if i'm getting the tranny and motor all as one unit, i dont have to worry about it correct? since it is an internal part of the motor/tranny right?

That's correct. If the engine and transmission were sold together from the factory as an installed drivetrain, the engine will have the correct flex plate. You only have to check for this when you replace an engine or transmission individually.

good deal. thanks for the help

and i found out last night that the cross members are in fact bolted in place, and not rivited (thank goodness! )

i'll be hitting up Gregg at Factory Tech for the tranny cooler and lines. hitting up NDebt at NHTOC for the crossmember. i should be getting the wiring with the engine harness wiring and computer. and i found a local shop to custom make me a driveshaft since it'll be cheaper than buying an aluminum one from a 01 HD with the 4R100 tranny since my aluminum one from my 00 HD with the 4R70W will most likely be too long

i should be good to go for this swap

gee...i guess posting up to find out if i'd run into any major issues was in fact a good idea. MUCH better than just attempting it blind and finding out on my own

if you guys think of any more stuff post it up. if i find anything else i'll be sure to post back incase anybody else needs this thread for future refrence
