Question Oil change in manual transmission

My mechanic said i shouldn't need to replace the tranny oil in my stick until about 100,000K, but the auto trannies need it much sooner. For those with sticks, what intervals did you replace the oil? Also, did you do a tranny fluid exchange or just drop the pan?

I replaced the fluid at 40K with Amsoil Synthetic. Having bought the truck with 37K, I began changing all of the fluids and performing the 60K service. I wanted to be sure that I knew what was in the truck. After making the fluid change, the stick was noticeably easier to shift, especially from 2-3.

I would encourage you to change it. It is a very easy job. Open the drain plug and let it pour out. It helps to jack up the passenger side of the truck. Then level out the jacking, screw in the drain plug, tighten to specification, and open the fill plug. I added mine back in with a large blub syringe. It takes 3.75 quarts to fill. I just layed down on the creeper and filled it up. 30 minute job.

Good luck! Hunt4Fun

I did the 92 broncos M5OD at 60K when I did the clutch job. 80K currently on the 97 150, and still shifts good, but I'll prolly do it before winter. No pan, just a drain plug on the bottom marked drain, and a fill plug hole on the side at the top that you need a bulb thingie or a little pump thingie to fill. Fords Mercon ATF has worked well for me. Also, I would do the xfer case at the same too if you have 4x4.

I changed my manual trans oil @ 30M and definitely found that it shifted better after the change. Just used the Ford oil. My experience agrees with the other posts; better shifting; I'd change the oil every 30M.
