Hard shift into 3rd - only first few times

Before I go spend a fortune to get my tranny worked on, thought I would ask here to see if anyone has seen this problem before.

Not long after my last transmission fluid change, my 99 f-150 started shifting hard from 2nd to 3rd gear. It is almost like it waits too long to shift then the rpms jump for just a second and it shifts. Here is the wierd part, it only does it when the engine cold (I live in texas so cold is a relative term). Basically, if I let it set a few hours or overnight, then the first time it into 3rd it does as I described above. After stopping at a light or stop sign and taking off, it will do it again, until about the fourth time, then it begins shifting normally. Seems odd to me that it would be a mechanical problem since the symptoms seem to change after the vehicle runs for a while.

Any one seen this before?

Update:

Had to change my IAC valve (would not always idle). Doing so required me to disconnect the battery which reset the computer. Seem to shift fine the first couple times after that, then the next morning, the same hard shift problem from 2nd to 3rd gear showed up again. Happened twice then went away. Parked it at work for 4 hours, then the hard shift was back again for about 3 take-offs from red lights then it was fine.
THis is really frustrating. Has anyone seen this before.

Did disconnecting the battery undo a computer flash/update for your transmission?

Not really sure. Did not that I might have such a flash update. Should I take it to a dealer and have the computer checked and reset?

I think your truck just needs to relearn how to shift. By disconnecting the battery you erased its memory. It can take up to 150 miles for the computer to relearn. try driving it for a couple more days and it should get better.

Most likely you have a bad 2-3 accumulator piston which is bypassing fluid pressure when cold, but once warmed up it expands and seals properly. Ford revised the piston to address this concern. The valve body has to be removed to access the 2-3 accumulator piston. Check the 2-3 accumulator spring while you are there, because they will occasionally break, causing similar symptoms. The part # for the piston is F7AZ-7H292-AB, and the spring part # is E0AZ-7F285-A.
