Arrow Is this the tranny going?

I am having a problem with my 2002 4.6L Auto Ext Cab 4x4

About once a day or less, I will be coming from a light or something that slowed me down. I would slowly give it throttle and I can feel a slight hesitation, like something is binding, so I give it a little more gas then I will hear a metal rubbing/binding noise for a split second then it will disapear its very noticeable in the cab.

Now, everytime this happens its at very low speed, maybe 10-20km/h. No bumps or potholes no turning. Just moving straight applying very little throttle. And as my best guess its coming from the front half of the truck. Its very hard to tell since it's random and quick.

Also when I am speeding up on the freeway, I feel a slight hesitation at medium throttle. Almost like a pulse maybe once or twice. Not very much but I can tell

Any help would be appriciated

Hopefullly your tranny isn't going on a 2002 Automatic. Anyway, don't forget that the box magnifies the sound, what you think that might be making the sound might be coming from farther back? Did you check the rear end? Sounds like you're pretty certain that its from the tranny, but I hope that it won't be.

Good luck

Well I hope it isnt either but this is what my guess is. Unless anybody can change my thinking. What could bind/hangup/make hesitate in the rear. Brakes?

Does the rubbing noise keep up with the engine speed?

Does it only do it while in gear?

Does it go away when the torque converter locks up?

The rubbing noise only happens once at very low speeds. A split second noise. It has never happened at higher speeds. I should also note that the truck only has 76,000 km.

I had a 2002 F-150 with the 4.6 and it did the very same noise that you are describing. Mine went 103k miles before I traded it and it was still going strong....I wouldnt worry about it.

U-joints

Be sure to check all the U-joints, CV-joints, etc. and wheel bearings. Huey
