Question Need Urgent Help from Tranny Experts

My transmission is leaking from the tail end where the tranny meets up with the driveshaft (kind of a big leak) and is slipping considerably, so since i'm up to almost 176k miles on this tranny i figured it's time for a new one. the question i have is that everywhere i look there are 2 tranny's for my truck, one with a certain ID number [A.T., 6-255 (4.2L), (4R70W, AODE-W), 4x2, w/ID F85P-GA (PKF-BC)] and one without that ID number [A.T., 6-255 (4.2L), (4R70W, AODE-W), 4x2, w/o ID F85P-GA]. well i've looked at my tranny and i don't have that ID number, but everywhere i call (meaning junkyards and used places) only has the one with the ID number. now the question, does anyone no the difference between the two transmissions and if the one with the ID number will work in my truck??? some info on my truck:
1998 F-150
4.2L V6
Automatic
2 wheel drive

Please help me...any help at all is appreciated as my transmission won't last much longer i'm sure.

Thats info is on a tag on the passenger side of the transmission it may be dirty and you may have to clean it to see it. I don't see where it matters you should be able to use any 98 up transmission. If your electrical connector for the transmission iteslf is white you somehow have an early transmission. If it is black you need a 98 up transmission.

yeah i'm pretty sure i got the ID number right (that was where i was looking), but i'll check on the electrical connector though. so there's no difference in the transmissions that would concern me using the ID numbered transmission in my truck?

No not really. Just the wiring type for that main connector can be different and the mlps changed so you have to use an old style mlps on an older truck. That 98 should have all of those updates already so you could easily use any 4r70w from 98-02 with the correct blot pattern and output shaft setup.
