Question HELP!!! Just finished the FT Separator Plate install...

What a day...but that's to long right now...I have a trip to Colorado Springs Sunday so I need some immedate advise!

Finished the install filled with 13 quarts of Mercron V as required...let it idle every 6 qts for about 30seconds to get the flow to the TorqueConverter...then after all in and registering on the stick...I started it up and let it idle for about 10 mins.

Let the garage headed out...shifting hard...forgot to take the setting down a little with my MICROTURNER but that should be a problem??? I seem fine...but coming to a stop it surged kind of???? Got out on the road..WHOOOOAAAA! It really hit 1/2, lightened up 2/3 and a little more to overdrive...nothing seemed weird...I liked it...then drove about 15miles, decidec to take it through town, stop lights and back to house...Then the OVERDRIVE light started that blasted blinking.

WHAT DO I DO???? I tried to search...but gosh..there is so much.

ANY IDEAS! THANKS for you assistance. If I drive in on my trip 1040miles round trip...that going to kill it???

A few other posts I've seen on this flashing overdrive seemed to be caused by a bad connection to one of the solenoids. Drop the pan and carefully check the electrical connectors and make sure they are on straight and fully engaged.

You either somehow accidentally left the tcc solenoid unplugged or something happened to it to jam it. You are just going to have to take the pan back off and have a look at it. Maybe the connecter is just loose. The tcc solenoid is the small one on the valvebody itself.

The brown spring is the upper spring for the 1-2 accumulator. The 1-2 accumulator is the one you can get to without taking the vb off.

It depends on how hard you want your shifts to be. For a really firm 1-2 take out the lower spring all together. For a really firm 2-3 remove the spring from that accumulator. The shifts will be better than stock if you leave the springs as original. Or very firm if you make those modifications.

Unhappy Confession Time!

Ok, well I just got back for Colorado Springs...and someone POKE ME IN THE EYE! $168.00 (another fluid/filter change and labor) later I found out what the problem was...I had put the 1/2 accumulator cap in upside down ( as soon as the guys at the tansmission shop dropped the pan I saw I whapper-jawed up in there)...so it was no wonder it overheated and surged, and, and, and, and....anyway, everything seems fine now, shifts GREAT...very pleased.

I do have another question though? and don't want to stir up a hornets nest...but I almost got into a fist-a-cuffs with the transmission tech. I told them I wanted Mercon V and and only that...that gave me the spill about using Mercon III and putting the additive...but I told them no, I wanted the Mercon V...he says so be it...if you want to pay $6 a quart fine. I told him to put it in...anyway, remembering to double check it, they started putting in the Valvoline MaxLife Mercon III...I stopped them and they told me that it was the same...anyway on the back of the bottle it DOES SAY IT MEETS MERCON V REQUIREMENTS????? Is it ok, or should I change it...I was at their mercy as I had no ride to go get anything else?????

THANKS again all!!!

I dunno alot of the new fluids claim to meet requirements. I just go get a case of the motorcraft mercon V at local parts sotres for about $3 a quart.

Glad you got the cap thing figured out, I'm re-doing hte instructions in July and I'll clarify that. On the fluid, well, they had you over a barrel, BUT, MERCON V is essentially MERCON/DEXTRON III with an additional chemical added. If is very common for shops to buy fluid in 55 gallon drums of MERCON and when MERCON V is called for, mixing an additive that makes it into MERCON V. I've never had anyone tell me of any problems from this.

Greg, Allen and all...THANKS much.

Greg, Some clearer pictures would/might have helped...BUT bottomline it was my knuckle-headed mistake! Anyway, my suggestion to ALL...DON'T do the change by yourself...another set of eyes would have helped me greatly. I love the shifting now...everything seems fine...I'll probably change out the fluid at about 5-8K just to recheck the trans pan for anything unusual and PUT A BIGGER TRANS Pan on with drain plug...one thing I didn't do. Oh, well always need an excuse to work on your ole' truck!
