What i was told was that because of the overdrive in the 04 F150's that the 4:56's aren't really what you need in it. The guy who is putting them in talked to the US Gear guys in Chicago and they recommened that I go with 4:88's because of the tire size(35 x12.50) and overdrive. It all has to do with the overdrive set up. I questioned him because of the rpm issue. He said that I will run around 2100 rpms at 60 mph. I will be quicker off the lights and it will tow better. I Tow an Off Road Jeep, boat or camper at times. It is to late now to go back, because it is on the rack as I type. I'll let you know. I was getting only 12 mpg with the stock gears and the bigger tires and 6" lift. I used 1/2 a tank to go around 120 miles over the weekend so it can't get worst I hope.

PS It appears Zapster has crawled back under his rock. As my late Dad use to say "You are what your words say"

Yeah, you don't buy one of these trucks to get good fuel economy anyway. In the end, it doesn't really make a whole lot of difference what kind of mileage you get, because we all knew going into it the trucks would suck gas. I would be interested to know the results when you have the truck back, though.

I agree - you won't see a significant MPG difference, but the shorter gears will make your truck feel a bit more responsive.

I've got 4.10s on street tires (31.5-inch equivalent diameter), and my MPG didn't really change all that much (had 3.31 gears before) but driveability is WAY better with the shorter gears.

Let it go, Zap. My father used to tell me "When you find yourself in a hole, the very first thing you do is STOP DIGGING!".

As for the gear thing... So you all say MPG are that noticeable on a gear upgrade? Hmmm been thinking about doing this one... how much would it run to do 4.88's on a 2wd?
