94 f-150 e40d shifts extremely hard until i unhook battery

I realize that it has been some time since anybody has posted on this subject so i hope somebody has figured it out by now. I have a 94 f-150 e40d with a 5.8 and 4x4. Anyway as i said in the subject my truck will start shifting extremely hard from when i put it in reverse or drive and through all gears even if i am babying it. Once i unhook the battery and reset the computer it is fine. At first, the only time it would happen was when i was towing, but it is happening more and more as of lately. I don't have a scanner to check and see if a code is being thrown but i do know that no light is coming on in the dash. If any of you guys that posted earlier have figured it out please let me in on the secret. I don't know how much more my u-joints can take. Thanks alot.

You'll need a tool to read the code that's stored in the computer. A '94 doesn't need an OBDII scanner, any cheap code readeer will work. You should be able to find one for about $25.

Without the code all you can do is start replacing things until you find the problem.

I got myself a scanner today and I checked it. What I got was a code 628 - excessive converter clutch slippage. I haven't experienced any slippage to my knowledge. I unhooked the battery and reset the computer and then rechecked it and the code was gone. Any ideas on what this code means. Please let me know. Thanks again.

It means the torque converter clutch or the transmission is slipping. It's going to get worse over time. Then you'll have to fix it.

The computer can detect slip a lot better than you can. It's slipping, just not enough that you can see it.

That is kinda what I figured. I'm gonna pick me up a torque converter in the next couple of weeks and try it out before going the other route and having the transmission gone through. Once I figure something out I'll let you know how evertything went.

Thanks for the input Casey.
