U-Joint inspection

I'm trying to identify a rattling noise coming from my trans or somewhere in the drive line of my 97 F150 4.2, automatic
(posted as "Drivetrain noise"). I checked the U-joints as suggested by dirtydOg and the rear set is tight, but the front has a lot of play. I can move the shaft approx. 1/4 inch in all directions, but can't tell if it's the joints. What I can see, is movement where the slip yoke enters the case. How much lateral movement should exist if any? Also, what rear end do I have with an 18 axle code?

Code 18 is a 3.08 non limeted slip. There should be no movement at the slip yoke to the case, normaly if the u joit has failed there will be a fair amount of red rusty residu around the u join cups, sounds as though you will need a tailshaft bushing and seal, you can better tell the u joints integrity with the drive shaft removed.

Thanks chucks bp, I'll have the bushing and seal replaced as well as the joints. Would you happen to know what the towing capacity is for this truck?
