clutch release bearing?
hey all and thanks for the invaluable site!
In speaking to a knowledgeable fellow regarding a certain manual transmission chatter/tick/??? it was suggested that the clutch release bearing might be failing.
I'm in the process of a serious tune-up on a '95 300 i6 2wd 3.55 ls standard. After 206000km/12875+mi a few details are in need of attention. Besides the 'howl' and the 'whine' and a certain low 'rumble', which, i'm informed, may be a result of this bearing, there is a 'chatter' up through the stick. The ticking/chatter only occurs under load, either accelerating or decelerating, and quits when the clutch is depressed. And i think it's getting slowly worse.
With a long trip home in a few weeks the prospect of setting up shop on a lonely stretch of northern highway is something less than appealing.
any experience/suggestions/oppinions?
Tommorrow is plug and wire day. The cap and rotor sure helped the idle but it's still rough in spots and cycles a bit. Might have to tie her to the diagnostic 'rack'. :|
anyway
Great site!

update
Further investigation, with the help of a qualified technician, reveals no immediate threats to the integrity of the tranny, although it will slowly fail over time. I will have plenty of warning and everything works just fine so...sometime down the road.....
Further to the 'howl'....0.40 out on the front drive line and .060 out on the rear makes for a noisy f150. A straighten, balance and 2 u-joints later and i'm lovin' the new ride.
Next week the differential. This might get rich but my experience inspecting limited slip rearends is nonexistent so i am willing to pay the fellow with 750k km's on his 78 bronco a stipend for his time.
