Unhappy Major Trans or Rear Diff Problems

For the past 2 weeks or so when i put my truck into drive on rare occasions ( maybe 1 time out of 20) my truck would act as if it hessitated to go into gear...would rev for a sec or 2 then bam jump into gear....well i thought this is bad so i checked transmission fluid and it was in great condition and perfectly full....I just figured maybe the truck hadnt had time to circulate tranny fluid or something....well yesturday it did this to me twice so i figured i would stop and try it again only when i pulled out i would put my truck into first gear and see if that happend....well....it didnt....but i let off the fuel and it held back and when it sounded as if a spline had stipped and was banging off of something...a loud repetitive CLANK.....yet the tranny didnt slip or offer 2...i drove on for a few minutes trying to get back home...i came to a red light....and i almost didnt get pulled back out due to slippage.....well i got going and it shifted to second still the same...made it to 3rd ran great!! tried to go do OD only to feel like it had downshifted from OD-1st gear and then back...so i decided i would turn OD off and limp back home...It worked to wonderfully in Drive and i made it home....well i decided to take it to the shop this evening after i went and got a tranny from a friend(its almost new he found it cheap and bought it not to long ago). Well i got back home my dad came to my house (with his FX4 5.4). Well we were going to go to the shop and i got in my truck only to find that what i first thought was the emergency brake to be locked....i screwed with it for a little while and decided that wasnt the problem....so we hooked a chain truck to truck and pulled it while it was in neutral and it just scooted the wheels.....well now im not sure if its my rearend locked up or if my tranny has crapped its pants.....any help would be greatly appreciated...

Sounds like the trans to me. If it ran fine in 3rd gear and with OD off then there is no problem with your diff. Have you changed the fluid/filter? Remove the trans pan, look for metal in the pan.

It's the tranny, if it was your diff you wouldn't have been able to pull it back to your dads house, you are probably going to need to rebuild the transmission.
