2004 F150 Transmission question

Does anyone else have a problem with the transmission where every once in a while it sorta kicks and makes the whole truck jerk. I am going to be taking it in to the dealership and see if they can fix it. It doesnt happen all the time but maybe 4-5 times in the last week.

I've noticed the same thing recently - between 40/50MPH. It happens when I let off the gas and then ease back into it (as in following behind another vehicle).

I haven't taken the vehicle in yet, but plan to do so with the first oil change.

I'll post any findings here - please do the same.

You're feeling lockup come in. If it only does it once it's fine, if it feels like rumble strips you have a problem.

We have an 04 XLT and I noticed it doing the same thing a couple of months ago. It's done it two other times since then so I decided to take it to the dealer. They made me set up a special transmission appointment which I waited two weeks for. I did the test drive with the technician they sent me out with and lo and behold, it did it twice in a row. The technician told me there was definitely something wrong. I left the truck there for the dealer to work on and got a call in the afternoon from the service desk. The woman told me there was nothing wrong with the transmission. I asked what kinds of tests they had run and she said none, no need to, their qualified transmission technician drove the truck later inthe afternoon and felt nothing out of the ordinary. I asked who the technician was that I had rode with in the morning and she said it was the floor manager. She also said that it's Ford policy, if the technician doesn't feel it then they can't investigate. She did say he felt all the shaking...another problem we've been dealing with...but that's for another post. Not sure what to do now. I guess I will keep taking it in there every time it happens and start documenting for the dsb.

Some info...

Hi. Welcome to the forums!

Don't know if you had a chance to use the great Search features here yet, but have a look at this thread - some useful info on TC lockup issues and possible remedies:

Good luck. Documentation is very important.

Cheers

Ok. Just got word back from the dealer, sounds like what dirtyd0g said and also the conversation that MGDfan links to -- dealer said it was torque converter lockup or the torque converter locking and unlocking. I guess the reason that the trans tech didn't notice it is because he said this was normal for the f150. Service manager also said there are no tsb's or ssm's on this problem. This site has been very helpful...definitely appreciate the senior member's input. Now I think I will go over and join the suspension thread and discuss my other issue there.

feels like transmission jerking the whole truck

I have the same problem. My 04 F-150 does it just about anytime I let off the gas once it has shifted through all the gears. If I step on the gas it will downshift and feel fine. Once it shifts and I let off the gas it will do it again. The dealer told me to pull the drive shaft and grease the tines. Black fluid came out when I pulled the drive shaft. I greased the tines and re-installed. The truck still does the same thing, just as before. Anyone have any suggestions?

I also have the same problem with my 04 F150. It's been going on for awhile now. I took mine to the dealer when it was under warranty and they replaced the rear clutch assembly. It started up again a couple years ago and I took it to a local mechanic. He did something to the rear end(can't remember exactly what). It worked for awhile but came back. What kind of price tag does the torque converter carry? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to fixing anything.

Are you sure it's not a low grade misfire?

Had the same problem in my 04 F150, had a missfire in my number 8 cylinder. Replaced the Plug and coil and problem was fixed! Cost me about $185 with labor so it wasn't too bad. Hope this helps.

Thanks, that helped.

I took it to the local mechanic instead of the dealer. #6 coil was showing a lean code. Replaced that coil and the problem improved a lot. I can still feel it but it is much less intense. I still have an issue but at least I don't feel that it has to be a transmission issue. Thanks.

I had the same issue. It went away after I replaced my plugs. I also found one that was loose.
