I have a Baumann shift kit in my Truck and absolutely love it. It has multiple stages for each gear. Nice kit.

can you explain "core charge"? i thought it had something to do with a fee to ford to get another valvebody if the buyer didn't send in his old VB?

The kit is not a valvebody.

That is correct. A core charge is a deposit of $___ you put forth until you send or bring back the item that is being replaced. Example: Your power steering pump has taken a dump. You don't want to remove the old one because that would leave you with no vehicle to get to the parts store to pick up the new one, so you leave a deposit (pay the core charge) and get it back when you return the old unit at a later time.

The New Factory Tech Separator Plate kit for the 4R70W is not the same as the Factory Tech Main Control for the 4R70W, but it does give a similar result, it's not quite as harsh. It was developed for the new 4R70W Monster Box because the builder (Jasper) didn't want to go through all you have to do for the older kit. I developed a "parts only" solution and we sell them for $85 by themselves. As Alan said, it's completely reversable to stock if you want to go back, and it's a pretty easy install. Not all of my dealers have them in stock yet, but any of them can take an order for one and I'll drop ship it from here if need be. Initital feedback on this has been pretty good, I'm happy with it.

Hey Alan,
Yeah, I dug up an old thread. I was searching for pictures but I still haven't found what I'm looking for (Isn't there a song with that title?). I bought a FT torque converter and a shift kit from you several months ago. I love the torque converter but the shift kit isn't right. My truck slams into third gear very hard and I'm just tired of it. I want to reinstall my factory plate and springs but I've never seen the inside of this tranny before. Can I do this by myself on my garage on a holiday with basic tools and a few quarts of Merc 5? What do I need to know before I drop the pan? Will the plate be staring at me once the pan is dropped, or do I need to know how to get to it?

Sorry for the stupid questions, but my old man needs to borrow my truck again next weekend and tomorrow is my only free day to fix this shift kit problem.

I had a Transgo shift kit in the 4R55E in my last truck (4.0 Ranger) and absolutely loved it. I mail ordered it for $30 and was the best money I've evr spent. It made shifts firm and responsive. I plan to do the same to this trruck soon.

Just reinstall the 2-3 accumulator spring and you should be very happy with the results.

Thanks for replying, Alan. I'm hoping it will be obvious once I drop the pan. I'm serious, I've fixed lots of stuff but I've never touched the inside of a transmission before. So all I need to do is figure out where the spring goes? I have the old plate and a spring. Any chance of linking a picture or will it be obvious? I mean it when I say that I wouldn't know an accumulator if it bit me.

I just pulled out the box with the old plate. There is a spring in the box, has some blue paint on it, 1.75" long and slightly over .75" diameter. Is this the 2-3 accumulator spring? I also have the original FT installation instructions.

That sounds like the 2-3 spring to me. You will have to remove the valvebody to get to that one. It is located on the passenger side rear of the tranny under (or above) the valvebody. It has a little metal retainer (we call it a bottle cap) just pull that retainer out and install that spring between the retainer and accumulator piston that is up in the bore. Make sure you put that retainer back in with the tit facing down.

Unhappy Help!

OK, I thought I did exactly what you said. But I screwed up somewhere, now I have no reverse! I can't get it out of my carport to see if I have forward gears, but something ain't right.
What did I screw up? It costs me over $30 in fluid every time I drop the pan, so I need to find out what I did wrong before I open it up again.

By all means save that expensive fluid. catch it in a clean pan. Sounds like you have the linkage out of place to me.

Got it fixed! Thanks Alan. I forgot to engage the linkage shift pin into the valve body piston thingamajig. I told you I never saw the inside of one of these things before! With the spring in the 2-3 accumulator, it shifts beautifully. No more slamming into gear and ripping my teeth out. I can enjoy driving my truck again, and I can let my Dad drive it without him getting all concerned that my transmission is about to fall out.

My advice to anyone installing a shift kit, leave the 2-3 spring in place unless you are going to be racing your truck on the dragstrip. Otherwise it's way too harsh for daily driving.
