Broken Shift Accumulator Spring repair
Ok, Someone help me out here. I have a 94 F-150 RWD , It will delay shift from 1 to 2 if I take off to hard, I have to be very very carefull on takeoffs. This sounds like it might be my problem. my tranny is a 4R70W I beleive. Now I am good at the hands on stuff but could someone tell me how to find these part numbers for my tranny? I wouldnt know what to point to if I saw a layout, Or would I?
Also isnt Mercon V for 4 wheeling and offroad vehicles?
Thanks for your help.

No offense but junk the 94 transmission and save money and headaches that go with it. You can technically upgrade that valvebody. You will need a better valvebody and a set of pins to make it fit. Ford sells a kit to do it.
At that point you will have a good working, bad transmission. Either have a transmission built for your truck or buy a lower mileage later model 4r70w to replace it. Then buy a new lockup solenoid for your truck put it on that transmission. Change the wiring inside the wiring harness and have yourself a decent transmission.

The only problem with that is, I know how to do a straight across swap on trannys 94 - 94. But I dont know how to do a say 99 on my 94. Or even what would be required to put something like this on it. This on it.. Am I right in assuming that a 99 on a 94 truck or even that ebay tranny would require quite a bit of work to wiring and possibly other components that a mechanically inclined novice like me wouldnt even think of?
I apologize, Let me pick your brains with a few more specific questions? Also thanks for pointing out that was a AOD. One unrelated question though. How do they lower the gearset in the tranny, And whats the point, Wouldnt be better to lower it in the rear end?
If I decided to go this route for a while, Where would I get the kit to do this? How would I find a part number for the kit? Is everything I need in the kit, Or would I have to get other parts?
I have been considering dropping the tranny out and takingit to a shop and telling them to build it with all the upgrades they can find for it, They qouted me $700 with a 3 month 5K mile warranty if I drop it and install it myself. Would this meet your definition of having one built for my truck? Or even doing this would there still be flaws in the tranny?
If I were to go this route, What year would you suggest, What kind of milage, no more that xx miles? Also wouldnt I need a new better T.C.? Also will the bolt patterns be the same?
If I get a new later model, Is this something that is needed or sugested? Where do I get a new lockup solenoid, How much to they usually cost? What do they do? Are they located on the Valve body?
What kind of changes to the wiring harness are required, How do I find out for the later model trans Im putting in it. And I take it I can leave the ECU the same?
Thanks alot for your help.

The proper rebuild kit will cost about $250 it just isn't possible for $700

The lockup solenoid is the electronic control for the torque converter clutch. They are located on the valvebody.

a 4r70w gearset can be adapted to your AOD transmission

fyi: there are several different 1-2 accumulator springs avaliable that'll fit in your vehicle.

Piston- F7AZ7F251AA $17.38
Spring- F75Z7F284AA $5.90
Spring- F75Z7F254BA $5.90
Parts total= $29.18 plus some trans fluid
Keep in mind that I had to buy two of the upper springs because I did not know which was in my truck at the time. The parts were at the dealership in less than 24 hrs.
EDIT: I will probably be replacing the bottom spring and cap like I should have done to begin with. Truck shifts much nicer and doesn't drop into second. The trans is still slugish shifting into all gears but thats why Troyer sells the Xcal

I just printed out the part numbers and repair directions for the 1-2 accumulator replacement. One question before I dive into this.....
Will this repair also take care of a 2-1 downshift clunk as well??
Thanks,
Kevin

If your truck requires the blue upper spring, let me know because I have an extra one sitting around the house I'm looking to get rid of. I'll just give you the damn thing if you want to pay shipping chargers.
I assume you used the F75Z7F254BA that you posted. I also have a '99 Scab with the 5.4, so I'd probably need the same thing you did. What color is the one you used? I couldn't find that number listed on the spec sheet that 2vmodular posted. I'm only going to get into this if I'm told it might fix my problem on the hard 2-1 downshift....
I certainly appreciate the offer of the spring, but chances are I'd be looking for the same one you installed...
How long did the job take ?
Thanks!!

If you have a good snap ring puller, you can have the job done in less than half an hour. Dro the pan, pull the old springs out, put them back in, fill the pan, and thats how it goes in a nut shell.
As for the blue spring, the part number is F75Z7F284AA

I believe I also have the same prob. as KDT (hard on 1-2 as well as 2-1). No one ever answered as to whether this fix will also help the 2-1 downshift. I got that too. If I've heard correctly, the accumulator is only needed when upshifting. Before I dive into this I'd like to make sure this is really the problem. Any ideas?? Thanks.
You cannot be that dumb
