Need tranny gear and VSS info

I have 2 simple questions if anyone can help.
I want to add a tranny cooler to my 97 F150 4rw70? tranny. Not sure if that is the actual code but I know it is the "70" and not the "100" tranny. I just bought a Ford Racing stack unit from Summit Racing that is rated for 18000 GVW. My truck's GVW is 6300 and GCWR is 11500. I will be pulling a #4500 pund trailer this summer and live in New England.

Question #1). Is this cooler large enough? I was going to buy the troyer cooler but I dont want to spend the $200 unless I have to. I still need to get a pillar pod and guages and dont want to wind up spending $500.

Question #2). I need to change the VSS gear to calibrate my speedo. I am running 305/70/16 tires and 4.10 gears. I changed from 3.55 gears and the ORP 265/70/17. Does changing the rear end gears effect the odometer or trip odemeter, it seems to be accurate.
Anyway, can someone tell me where on the tranny the wire goes in. I have seen how to do it in my Hanes manual but it doesnt tell you where on the tranny. Maybe somone can take some pics for me, or tell me exactly where it is.

Any help to either question would be greatly appreciated.

Cooler should be fine.
A trans temp gauge will tell you the first time out.
I use electric trans and oil gauges on a panel in the center bottom of the dash along with a Prodigy controller.
What wire are you refering to?
For the VSS, I can't be of too much help on what you need to do for your combination.

Bluegrass,
The wire I am referring to is the wire for the speedo that goes into the tranny. I am not sure which one it is.
I do plan on going with a full set of guages for temps, pressure and vac.

According to my calculations you need a 21 tooth speedometer gear. It should be purple. Your stock gear should have been a 19 tooth.

Alan,
Can you tell me where on the tranny the VSS gear is located. There are several wire packs that go to the tranny and it is hard to see around the heat shields and skid plates etc. to see if they go into the tranny or not without taking everything off. I was going to tell the parts dept. I need the gear you told me about and also show them the one I have and tell them I am off 7-8 mph at 100 mph. (just about 4 mph at 50 mph). Should I bother or are you certain this is the gear I need. Purple 21 tooth.

well I did my calculations here using the figures you stated and knowing that you have an 8 tooth output shaft.

The vss is located in the extension housing at the rear of the transmission unless you have a 4x4 which would put it in the transfer case.

I've got a '97 with 4x4 and the VSS gear is on the tail shaft on the outside of the case just before the yoke.

It took me all of five minutes to swap my stock 20 tooth for the 19 tooth that I needed because of my taller tires.

It's a single 10mm bolt that holds it in. Make sure you clear off any dirt and stuff around it before you remove it. There is also a small O ring on it. Be careful not to damage or lose it. The gear is held on with a small C clip, but you just remove it, pull the old gear off, put the new gear on, replace the C clip, reinstall and it's a done deal.....

Good luck!

Mitch,
So if I have a 4x4 as well, the wire will be located on the transfer case at the rear right before the drive shaft yoke?
When you pull the gear out, does any fluid leak out as well?
Thank you

The wire will be attached to the VSS 'module' thing that attached to the case. You don't have to disconnect any wires, just unscrew and pull out. A little fluid will come out, but nothing to worry about. That's why you want it clean up before you pull it out.
