Hurst 5 speed shifter
Does anybody know if Hurst has made a shifter for the 97- 03 F 150's 5 speed that works without all the previous problems they were having in the past? Do they have one that exists that doesn't hit the dash and fits correctly?
If so, where can I get one? And if anybody out there has one, please share your review of the shifter. How does the length of the Hurst compare to the original? Do you have to reach farther forward or does the shifter feel like its in the same place as the original? The original has excelent placement but the throws between each gear is to long, of coarse. Thanks, Mark M

Here are some pics and a bit of an explaination on the install that may or may not be of some help to some of you:

Here is a pic of the factory shifter with the upper lever removed, and next to it is the inner boot. The toughest part of the install was dealing with the inner boot. There are four 8mm hex head screws that fasten it. Two of them are exposed forward of the shifter but two are under the carpet rear of the shifter. It was tough getting at the ones under the carpet. Hurst says in the instructions that "some" trucks will have two of the screws under the carpet. If yours does, it will be much easier to pull the carpet back as much as you can.

Here is what you see when you have all of the factory shifter off. Make sure to put a shop rag in there when you remove the remnants of the old gasket.

Here is the first part of the new shifter to be installed. It's shipped assembled so you have to take it apart then put it back together. It's actually pretty easy from here untill you get back to those two 8mm screws under the carpet.

Here is the main part of the new shifter. I was supposed to take the shift lever off to do this part but I bent my allen wrench trying to remove the bolts.

This pic shows the inner boot in place. It requires some cutting to make it fit. I didn't get a pic of how frusterated I was trying to work around the carpet. I eventually pulled it back enough to reposition the clip that had moved, that I couldn't see, that one of the screws goes into. I also didn't get a pic of the bone head move I did leaving a screwdriver under the carpet after I had put it back in place.

What I'm showing you here is how close the factory boot comes to the plastic covering the heating/cooling componants. I was going to use the Hurst boot but it doesn't fit too well near that plastic piece.

Here is the job complete.
I hope that someone else gets one of these soon. I would like to compare notes.

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...hreadid=190520 Check this thread out!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!
The shifter works fine. It is the same length or actually call it hight as at OEM shifter. It reduces the throw about 30% but the **** is not within the same rectangle of movement as the OEM. It is a little further back which suits me fine. What I mean is if you took 1st, 2nd, 5th and Reverse and drew a rectangle using these lever positions as the corners the rectangle created with the hurst shifter would be smaller and a few inches further away from the instrument panel. The only problem that I know of that involved hitting the instrument panel with your hand in 1st, 3rd, and 5th was caused by Hurst when they shipped the wrong shift lever. I used the OEm plastic base and cut the hurst boot to fit. That gives me an oem apperance with out the dorkey little boot that the instructions tell you to use with the factory boot. Here is a link to some pictures of the shifter installed. FYI my truck has a 3inch body lift so the shifter appears lower than a stock truck.
