Thumbs down Man what happen, tranny

Hey guys I got a 1998 Expedition, 5.4 L 4x4, 129,0000, heres the deal, I decided o take the truck out on saturday, everything was fine, no problems, never had any tranny problems, parked the truck, came back, put it in drive and it just didnt have the power it should have had, so i made it home and that was it, all i have is reverse, when in drive, 4h 4L it just revs and sometimes at about 3500 rpm's it will start to move aliitle as if i was letting of a clutch or something, I changed the fluids, not too bad looking, the screen was good, no metal particles or anything. Took it to the tranny shop they said the transmission is gone, I would have thought that the engine light or something may have came on. Can you help me out here, could it be something else i should look at before i get killed at the tranny shop. Thanks

To me, that sounds like the "shotgun" approach to fixing things...

I think the E4OD became the 4R100 in the late '90s, but I'm not sure exactly when. I'm sure one of the other guys here knows.

Is the fluid at the proper level? If it has an external cooler, any evidence of leaks? Any evidence of trans. fluid in the coolant tank (internal cooler in radiator ruptured)?

Could be the pump, I guess. Factory_Tech is a sponsor of the website. You might ask him for some ideas.

I wouldn't be surprised if you find this was a transfer case issue. Just doesn't sound like normal transmision problems.

Question

I have the same problem in my 1990 F150 Supercab, 4X2, E40D trans. I have reverse but no forward. Dirtydog mentioned maybe a transfer case. I recently replaced the rear end. Truck was running great but i began to notice what seemed to be a power loss in acceleration. Once up to cruising speed truck ran great. Prior to my problem i was having fuse problems. Could this be something electronic or do i need to start looking for another tranny?

I'm no mechanic, but lose of power just before it stopped going into drive sure sounds like the clutches are shot. Infact, serverly shot clutches ( from jackrabbit starts or racing ) can get so bad that they "heat weld" together. Put it into drive and listen to the engine as you rev it up. Then put it into N and listen as you rev it up. Does the N sound like its reving free'er and D seems to be like your trying to brake torque? If so, then the clutches are welded together.
I know this as my son fried his clutches in his MonteCarlo last fall. They seemed to have just gone in an instant like yours ( after loosing power on the way home ). And yes, he had reverse "sometimes". I was really wierd. All the tranny shops around here wanted $1400 min to fix, and said worse case would be $2300. I picked up a reman transe from Pheonix Hard parts for $700 with a 12/12,000 warranty. They sell the E4OD for $950. Shipping is about $260 round trip ( core return ). So far, no complaints with the rebuild ( only been on road for a month now ).

Thumbs up New Tranny

I would buy a new tranny and not get it rebuilt. They charge a lot of money to rebuild the tranny and a lot of times there are problems afterward. I had a tranny rebuild and first problem was a fuel line being rubbed making a noise, second a tranny leak and third an erratic shift. Then the kicker, shop rebuilds the whole tranny and used an old $3 seal from the blown tranny and it blows on a road trip leaving me stranded on a holiday trip in the middle of BFE. Tranny had to be rebuilt a second time and I got rid of the truck after that. The tranny shops claim the tranny will be better than stock but that is a roll of the dice. Plus with a rebuilt tranny the only place to get your warranty work it an ATRA tranny shop and you wont be able to find on in the middle of BFE. I was happy to find a dealership which was not authorized to fix my rebuilt tranny. Just buy a new one from the dealership and have it installed, that way if it goes you take it to a dealership and get it fixed if it is in the warranty period. All of my problems were shortly after the rebuild within no more than 2K miles if that.
