Yellow plunger in the pan

First off let me say I found your great web site a couple of days a go google searching some problems with my transmission (1998 F-150 2wd 4R70W). It sound like the same problem that some seam to have here with the torque convertor shakes,so I drained the convertor and im now in the process of changing the filter when i dropped the pan and found a little yellow plunger with an O-ring around it.I did some checking with my brother since he works at NAPA and he seams to think its the original stopper that was in the hole where the dip stick went from the factory.I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas before I put it back together.

BTW if thats the case then 115,000 without having the fluid changed and great site keep up the good work here.

If you are the first one to get that plunger to your Ford dealer you win the $1 million prize! That's what it's there for!

Just kidding. He's right. The trans is built without a dipstick. When the trans is installed in the truck the dipstick is pressed in, and the plunger is pushed into the pan.

Yes that is THE indication that you are doing the first ATF change - unless the previous owner always took it to the dealer to have the ATF changed. They don't drop the pan, preferring to tap into the fluid cooler hoses to effect the change.
