Help Me Out Here Guys
Help Me Out Here Guys
I have a 4R70W transmission and a 2 wheel drive truck.
I recently purchased a B&M deep sump aluminum transmission pan.
Now for my question...
Do I just use a regular stock filter or do I need an extension?
The guy behind the counter at the auto parts store seemed befuddled and confused when I asked him. He only told me there is no other filter that comes up on his computer for this transmission than the stock one that I currently have.
The box that the pan is in contains no extension and no instructions....just the pan, gasket, and bolts.
I was on hold on the phone forever with B&M and never did get a live person.
Can someone help me out here with some info before I change pans this weekend.
Thanks.

you need the extention...whats the use of a bigger pan if you still cant get the fluid from the bottom?..i take it the B&M pan has fins on it ....its cooler on the bottom..'nuf typed...zap!
'nuf typed...zap!
Actually, that's not enough typed.
I originally thought I was short-changed an extension when I didn't get one in the box with the pan.
However, someone on another forum just told me to look under my truck at the stock transmission pan. He told me to notice how there's a small square area at the bottom of the pan that is significantly lower than the rest of the pan. He said that is where the pick-up is.
He went on to tell me that the deep sump pan is the same depth all over as that small square in the middle of the stock pan. Therefore, a stock filter is used and no extension is needed.
In fact, he told me if I attempted to put an extension on it, that i wouldn't be able to get my new pan on because the extension would be too low.
I went out with a flashlight and looked under my truck...and sure enough, just like he said...there is a small square area in the pan that is a good deal lower than the rest of the pan.
So, what he has told me makes a great deal more sense than what you just typed (as if it should be a no-brainer).
So apparently your offering was not "'nuf typed."

Mr Cleaver
Sometimes I wonder why people come on forums like this to get tech. information!!
I will admit that there are times when you are left with little choice, but In your instance I would have asked June or the Beaver first, then tried the manufactuer again.
Some of these guys who post here are REAL EXPERTS!!
