4R70W Tranny Rebuild.

Is there any specialty tools needed to rebuild a 4R70W Tranny? What is the average price for a Kit? Any manuals out there helpful?

I have rebuilt a couple of Chevy Turbos in the past as well as a tranny out of Mercury Montigo. I believe it was a 75? Any way it wasn't to difficult. Just tore it down and replaced new parts and followed the directions. Oh yeah losts of my favorite beverage.

Mine is slipping and I bought this thing used a few yeas ago. 98 with 97k. I have flushed and changed fluid religiously. The fluid still looks good. I would rather fix it than band-aid it. Any tips/suggestions apreciated.

Yes there are alot of specialty tools for this transmission. I don't know what kind of price you can find on a kit, but I can tell you it is cheaper to have someone with the tools to do it unless you are going to build 3.
Figure about $600-$800 in parts and at least $1000 in tools to rebuild that trans yourself.
MN12 performance has a nice how to article on the subject and the tech articles on tccoa show you how to do it right.

I work for a transmission shop and i do know that getting the tranny out is a real pain. I know where we live in michigan we get around 1500 in the truck and about 1000 out depending on whats all wrong.

Thanks for the replies. I was afraid of that. I may pull the valve body off, due a super clean and add fluid for a quick fix (maybe). It looks like I'll drop this thing out and take it to a shop. Its got a little age but I really like the truck besides a rebuild is cheaper than payments. Thanks again.

It's considerably cheaper to buy a late model trans and convert it to your vehicle(or convert your vehicle to the trans) and you will end up with a better transmission.

I hadn't thought of a late model until you mentioned it. I don't know why. Maybe sticker shock has desipated yet. I know of a late model wreck I will check into. Again thanks all.
