Low tranny fluid?
Low tranny fluid?
Well, i have a 97 F150 lariat, with a 4.6L and a 4 speed? 5 speed? auto trannie... the truck has about 50k on it, it had 29k on it in 98 when my grandfather bought it, and i got it from him about a month ago at 48k... so it was sitting for a LONG time... and the most driving it ever saw was from my house to benicia and back for a few months/years (basically, its all freeway miles) so im not so sure of the integrity of all the seals... but maybe there could be another problem with the transmission.
When i got it a month ago, i put about a quart of tranny fluid in because it was low... and now, one month later, i check it again, and its another quart low... i looked under the truck, and the only stained up oily area is at the tranny pan. The oil pan and everything on that side of the undercarriage is perfect, just the transmission pan where i see a little bit of red fluid collecting at the tip of the pan bolt heads, and some gunky old residue all over the pan itself. Would this signify (even without any large leaks at the bottom of where the truck sits every day) that the pan gasket has gone bad? there are no leaks at the rear tranny seal, and i popped the rubber "O" gasket off the torque converter shield to see if any was collecting inside there, but nothing... perfectly dry (as it should be lol) so with the exterior collection of transmission fluid, even without a dripping leak, would that cause a quart drop over a months time? is this my problem? or should i look deeper?
