Low Speed Wheel Noise
I've got a 1998 XL, 5-speed with 96K on the 4.2L V6.
The noises started the day after I put new, meatier Sport Kings on my stock rims. I started hearing a squeaking/squealing noise and some metallic popping sounds from the rear wheels. The noises aren't particularly loud and fade away when I get to 20 mph and/or upshift. The noises speed up and slow down with the wheel speed. Reverse gear has the same problem.
The noise is really annoying at low speeds, like in a parking garage, but doesn't happen at all when rolling in neutral.
Are my new tires to blame or could this be a dying clutch plate?
Any suggestions would certainly be appreciated because just turning up the radio isn't much of an option.
Best regards,
